Peruvian Avocado Exports Grow Conquering Europe

The Peruvian avocado industry experienced significant growth during the first six months of the 2022/23 season. Growers exported 173,309 metric tons, an increase of 13% compared to the previous season.

The strong performance and sustained demand for Peruvian avocados indicates that the industry can grow and thrive in a highly competitive market.

The success of Peruvian avocados on international markets is due to their excellent quality and the commitment of growers to sustainable agricultural practices.

Key export markets

The main commercial destinations for Peruvian avocados this season are the Netherlands and Spain. Shipments to the United States have decreased to prioritize European markets.

The Netherlands accounted for 36% of exports, or 61,355 metric tons shipped, with a value of $112 million. This robust demand was driven by lower avocado imports from Peru’s direct competitors and European producers.

Spain accounted for a 22% share, with 36,467 metric tons imported for $68 million. Spain has experienced a disappointing avocado season due to a severe drought, decreased production and smaller fruit sizes, which increased demand for Peruvian avocados.

China is another major destination, accounting for 15% of Peru’s exports, with 23,282 metric tons shipped at a value of $46 million.

Industry strengths

The strengths of the Peruvian avocado industry lie in its remarkable growth and market diversification over the last few years.

The increase in both volume and value compared to the previous season is a positive indicator of the demand for Peruvian avocados in international markets.

Market diversification is another strength since Peru not only exports to traditional destinations such as the Netherlands, Spain and the United States, but is also opening up new opportunities in Asia, where the volume imported during the first four months of 2023 has increased by 70% compared to the previous year.

Additionally, the industry has demonstrated its ability to adapt to changing market needs by offering varieties and packaging options that meet the evolving demands of buyers.

Challenges and outlook for the future

Despite the growth and progress achieved so far, the industry still faces challenges that could affect its future development, such as climatic problems (especially droughts and floods), which affect avocado production and supply.

The expansion of avocado production in countries such as Columbia, is also creating greater regional competition for international markets. That’s why Peruvian producers must continue improving their products to maintain their competitiveness.

However, even with these challenges, the outlook for Peruvian avocados is positive, especially as international demand continues to increase.
