Peruvian agroexports: fruits leading the way.

According to data from the Peruvian Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (MIDAGRI), agro exports in Peru have grown 0.2% year-over-year in the first five months of 2023, to reach an impressive sum of $3.52 billion.

Fresh produce, particularly fruit, has seen the largest export growth. Top-earning products include grapes with $678 million (20%), avocados with $462 million (14%), mangos with $206 million (6.1%) and blueberries with $171 million (5.1%)

Some of these products showed the highest growth compared to 2022: avocados at 39%, blueberries at 27%, and grapes at 18%.

Peru’s thriving fruit export industry

The surge in agro exports reflects the strength and competitiveness of the Peruvian fruit sector in the global market, which is a crucial source of income for the country. Peru stands out in the industry due to their wide range of high-volume fruit exports:

• Peru is the world’s largest blueberry exporter, with the United States as its primary market, accounting for 53% of the total volume exported.
• It’s the second largest avocado exporter, behind only Mexico. Peruvian avocado exports have consistently grown, with the Netherlands (36%) and Spain (22%) serving as its main commercial destinations.
• Peru’s fresh grape industry is in direct competition with Chile’s for world leadership in exports. Projections show that Peru will surpass its competitor this year due to a potentially significant drop in Chilean exports during the current season.
• It’s one of the largest mango exporters, sharing the leadership in Latin American production and exports with Mexico.
